Fascinating courtly intrigue and bloody power games set on a generation ship full of secrets―Medusa Uploaded is an imaginative, intense mystery about family dramas and ancient technologies whose influence reverberates across the stars. Michael Levy: Enchantment of the Tortoise Lyre

I post a lot of musings from my brother Michael, but there's another Michael who appears here: Michael Levy. Michael Thiele makes hardwood music, but Michael Levy plays the ancient lyre, and he has a new album coming out. Read his announcement below. (The image above is not from his album, but I was trying to find something in the "ancient" theme.)

From Michael Levy:

I thought I would like to share with you the creative process behind the completion of my new album, “Enchantment of the Tortoise Lyre” - available now, from all the usual digital music platforms & available to directly download from my website, with lossless audio available from Bandcamp!

In developing my ideas for a new recording project, I usually first conjure up either a specific tune or a spontaneous improvisation for my lyres to quite quickly arrange & record … then spend sometimes months trying to think of some mythologically-based title to add the most amount of meaning to the feeling of each of these tunes (then spend years dealing with comments on YouTube from brain-dead 'fundamentalist religious types', who not being able to separate fact from aesthetic fiction & not being able to resist imposing their moronic mind-set on everyone else, think my music, all of which is just an evocation of ancient historical aesthetic fiction, is literal 'Hymns of Homage' to 'evil' pantheons of pagan gods'!!).

Despite this fact, in this particular project, I almost began to think that track 8, “The Hex of Hecate”, was literally ‘hexed by Hecate’, the terrifying three-headed ancient Greek goddess of magic! I realized a few days before the album was released, that I had uploaded the 'wrong' version of the final master!! Although pretty much nobody but myself can tell the difference between a few reverb overlays etc., this is just frankly too much for my 'nerdy/bordering on psychotic perfectionism to bear...

I then had to spend a small fortune on my cell phone from the UK to the USA to CD Baby, who distributes my music, to arrange to re-upload the ‘correct’ audio for the track…only for them to email me the next day, to say that the hyperlink I provided to the audio file did not work!!

I then had to try & use Dropbox to send the audio, which I had not used for over a decade & spent hours until the late hours attempting to get it to get my track across the Atlantic & across the continent of the USA from East coast to West coast, to the CD Baby offices in Portland, Oregon.

The corrected track finally arrived - but a day too late as the album had just been released!!

I then had to wait almost a week have to wait an infernal week, before the 'correct' audio master had finally replaced the 'subtely incorrect' one (which had by then, had gone out to about 50 digital music platforms!).

To hear the subtle differences between the audio I intended and the ‘incorrect’ version I spent so long attempting to rectify, compare the now thankfully corrected track on Spotify to the original incorrect version of the track which featured on my YouTube presentation of it, before I realized that this was the ‘wrong’ version!

Michael Levy: The Lyre of Hermes

I've spent a lot of time lately posting the musings of my brother, Michael Thiele, I've neglected the doings of Michael Levy, promoter of ancient music and virtuoso of the ancient lyre. Here is a recent announcement from Michael Levy:

New album out:

https://open.spotify.com/album/75Cg2jZCI0iCM7AseeHx1B?si=r3ujnd4bSr2K36HA7sHKxA

Originally released as a short EP length album in 2015, in August 2023, I decided to re-record in higher quality, extended length arrangements of all of the original tracks & 4 new additional tracks for this full LP album length re-release.

As well as Spotify, the album can also be streamed on Apple Music, iTunes, Amazon & a host of other major digital music platforms.

Studio quality audio, complete with a PDF booklet of the detailed album notes is available from Bandcamp:

Michael Levy: Amen Dunes

I've spent a lot of time lately posting the musings of my brother, Michael Thiele, I've neglected the doings of Michael Levy, promoter of ancient music and virtuoso of the ancient lyre. Here is a recent announcement from Michael Levy:

I am really excited to announce that Damon McMahon of Amen Dunes, is featuring my lyre music in his new album!

Amen Dunes is the musical project formed by American singer-songwriter and musician Damon McMahon in 2006.

A new recording of my original viral YouTube arrangement for solo lyre of the Bronze Age Hurrian Hymn Text H6 (circa 1,400 BCE - the oldest notated melody in history!) will feature in a track in the new album "Death Jokes" by Amen Dunes - out on 10th May!!

I was contacted by Damon McMahon's record company back in 2022 - who requested a bespoke re-recording, as near as possible to the audio from my original, 'live from my spare room' (10,000,000 plus views!) version of my 2008 YouTube arrangement of the 3,400 year old Hurrian Hymn.

The dreamy mood Damon McMahon manages to conjure with his music serendipitously matches my own solo lyre recording projects - never having even heard of Amen Dunes here in the UK, I have since fallen in love with the wonderfully experimental, fuzzy textures he uses as a the background layers to his songs, many of which all feature beautifully elegant melodic lines & many of which are also modal in character.

As far I so far know, the clip of my lyre music will come at the tail end or last song of this album of original songs by Damon McMahon, who releases contemporary music under Amen Dunes. No matter how brief the loop of my lyre music in whatever specific track it eventually features on Damon's new album, this amazing cross-over of musical genres the first real small step I have come in attaining my dream, of making the lyre 'mainstream'!

Michael Levy: Musica Lyra

I've spent a lot of time lately posting the musings of my brother, Michael Thiele, I've neglected the doings of Michael Levy, promoter of ancient music and virtuoso of the ancient lyre. Here is a recent announcement from Michael Levy:

Now available from all major digital music platforms, I am delighted to announce the release on all the usual digital music platforms today of my antidote to the chaos of the modern world. “Música Lyra" - an ancient Roman-themed album inspired by themes from stoic philosophy. Here is Spotify album link:

https://spotify.link/djKwY2RXTBb

The album explores through music, the turbulent emotions of unresolved desires, grief, regrets, longings & sorrows which can cloud the positivity of life, which though endurance of the human spirit & the focus of stoic meditation, can be overcome, until the ultimate stoic ideal of “Amor Fati” - developing a love of fate, no matter what obstacles we may encounter during the brief enigma of our conscious experience of life.

As I have no record company, I literally solely rely on the support of my much valued listeners in order to ‘get my music out there’ to new sets of potentially receptive  ears - if any of you are able to kindly share news of the album's release across social media & include tracks in new Spotify playlists & post album reviews on platforms such as iTunes or Amazon, this would be greatly appreciated.

As a taster of the album, please find attached track 2, ‘Pluviam Frigus (Cold Rain)' - enjoy!

Michael Levy News: New Collaboration!

Michael Levy has kept busy during this semi-plague and has new connections with interesting entities. Read his announcements below and follow the links.

New Collaboration with the Ancient History Encyclopedia & a 'Latter-Day Miracle' from Brazil's First Temple of Antinous!

Dear Loyal Lyre Fans,

Firstly, I am delighted to announce the official start of my collaboration with the Ancient History Encyclopedia - whom I have given permission to feature my ancient-themed lyre music in each and any of their audio presentations, podcasts & video productions, in perpetuity - the nearest I can get, to a record company, for getting my music out to the 'potentially receptive, niche global target audience'!

Here is a list of some of the Ancient History Encyclopedia podcasts and YouTube videos recently produced, which feature my music:

Daily Life in Ancient Mesopotamia

Dogs in the Ancient World

Ergamenes

Greek Mythology

The Life and Death of Ancient Cities - Interview with Author Greg Woolf

Carthage

The Minoans: A Civilization of Bronze Age Crete

The Mycenaeans: A Civilization of Bronze Age Greece

Secondly - I finally have some actual video footage from the premiere of Rufus Wainwright's epic second opera, "Hadrian" -  featuring his arrangement of my ancient tyre theme, "Hymn to Zeus"  in Act II Scene IV!

How I finally managed to acquire this video footage was almost like divine intervention from Antinous himself! After learning the awful truth, that my laptop screen capture app miserably failed to record the one-off "Watch Party" livestream of the premiere on 10th August & after pleading on Twitter, if anyone else out there had recorded it, I was contacted by an actual latter-day Priest from Brazil's First Temple of Antinous...who finally enabled me to see the opera; almost 2 years after the premiere in Toronto!!! The best things in life, are certainly those worth waiting for...

My Lyre Theme - in Rufus Wainwright's HADRIAN

Wishing you all health, happiniess...and the continuation of sanity, during these troubled times (towards this goal, please enjoy the meditative mood of your free bonus track, "The Scented Gardens of Alcinous" - track 1 from my 2020 album of the same tiitle; actually recorded, produced & released during the peak of the pandemic here in the UK). Thanks once more, for your continued & invaluable support in my musical quest.

Good News for Fans of the Ancient Lyre

I haven't done a darn thing during the Covid-19 crisis except clean out my garage, but Michael Levy does not suffer from my sort of creative malaise.  Read his announcement below for some good news:

1. I have just been contacted by a music curator from the BRITISH LIBRARY SOUND ARCHIVE - who wants to preserve for posterity in the NATIONAL COLLECTION, the entire repertoire of my 'New Ancestral' musical creations...for all future generations!!

As far as my musical mission goes, at reintroducing the recreated lyres & ancient musical modes back into the modern musical world, for me, this is a truly 'MISSION ACCOMPLISHED MOMENT'! Orpheus may have been the most legendary mythological lyre player of antiquity, but unlike me, neither he nor all the actual lyre players of ancient times had the either the opportunity or the technology to preserve their musical art, forever, in perpetuity - NOW I DO!

Not only will each and every track from each and every album and single I have continually been releasing since 2008 be painstakingly conserved and preserved, but also, so will the original, raw 'live' YouTube audio which originally resulted from my 2008 'live from my spare room' rendition of the oldest written melody in history (Hurrian Hymn Text H6) - currently the most viewed presentation of any extremely early music, on the planet!

This is about the nearest I have ever come to something akin to the iconic Sci Fi ideal of  achieving immortal...via mind-uploading!

Indeed, to quote Grimes, from her utterly epic 2018 single, "We Appreciate Power"...

"...And if you long to never die
Baby, plug in, upload your mind
Come on, you're not even alive
If you're not backed up on a drive

And if you long to never die
Baby, plug in, upload your mind
Come on, you're not even alive
If you're not backed up, backed up on a drive"
- I AM NOW!!

2. Other important news - as well as all the usual digital music platforms, all my albums can also be purchased direct from my website! Simply visit the either the "Music" & all the sub-pages of the "Albums for Solo Lyre" sections to make your meditative track selections!

In particular, this new option of my website will now enable you to either preview in full or purchase my new album, "The Scented Gardens of Alcinous", ahead of its release across the usual digital music platforms on 3rd May! As a taster, just for you loyal subscribers, attached is track 2, "Sacred Rites of the Priestesses of Cybele" - enjoy!

Hoping all you lovely lyre music fans stay safe, sane and well during the ongoing global crisis - you are all in my thoughts. I sincerely hope that my music brings you all some much needed inner peace during these, the most challenging and troubled of our modern times.

Echoes of Ancient Mesopotamia and Canaan

Michael Levy has a new album available!  Follow the links and order today . . .

ECHOES OF ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA & CANAAN

I am pleased to announce that my new album, "Echoes of Ancient Mesopotamia & Canaan" is available to pre-order from Amazon & iTunes from TODAY, ahead of its general digital release across all the usual major digital music platforms on 1st March 2020!

For all the details and to download a free PDF booklet of the detailed album notes, please see my new webpage about the release:

Pre-order this album on iTunes!

Pre-order this album on Amazon!

This album is my mostly historically inspired evocation, of the lost music of ancient Mesopotamia & Canaan; but as the final track, this release also features my most recent arrangement of the reconstructed melody of an actual bronze age hymn to Nikkal; the oldest notated fragment of music which can still be interpreted and performed today; performed this time, on a replica of an actual surviving bronze age lyre!

For most of the tracks, I play this fascinating replica of an actual, typical bronze age Canaanite form of asymmetric lyre; custom-made for me by Luthieros. The design of this lyre was based on the same proportions of a Canaanite form of lyre found in Egypt, dating to circa 1,500 BCE and which is preserved in Leiden.

These types of lyres were almost certainly introduced into Egypt during the reign of the Canaanite Hyksos kings, that ruled northern Egypt as the 15th dynasty, c.1630–1523 BCE. The exotic, sitar-like tone of the bass strings of this lyre, are due to the flat-topped, groove-less bridge. As almost all the lyres still played throughout the African continent today still retain this distinctive buzzing timbre (particularly the Ethiopian begena), since the lyre originally probably came to Africa via ancient trade routes between the ancient Near East and Egypt, it is indeed far more likely, that this buzzing timbre of the lyre was much closer to the original ancient near eastern/middle eastern lyres of antiquity.

For some of the tracks, I also use the more sinister, darker timbre of my tenor register 10-string lyre - ideal for evoking the mystery of the long-forgotten pantheon of ancient Mesopotamian & Canaanite gods!

As a taster, here is a YouTube presentation of track 4, "The Magic of Marduk":
