Fascinating courtly intrigue and bloody power games set on a generation ship full of secrets―Medusa Uploaded is an imaginative, intense mystery about family dramas and ancient technologies whose influence reverberates across the stars. Disturbing, exciting, and frankly kind of mind-blowing.” ―Annalee Newitz, author of Autonomous

Michael Levy: Enchantment of the Tortoise Lyre

I post a lot of musings from my brother Michael, but there's another Michael who appears here: Michael Levy. Michael Thiele makes hardwood music, but Michael Levy plays the ancient lyre, and he has a new album coming out. Read his announcement below. (The image above is not from his album, but I was trying to find something in the "ancient" theme.)

From Michael Levy:

I thought I would like to share with you the creative process behind the completion of my new album, “Enchantment of the Tortoise Lyre” - available now, from all the usual digital music platforms & available to directly download from my website, with lossless audio available from Bandcamp!

In developing my ideas for a new recording project, I usually first conjure up either a specific tune or a spontaneous improvisation for my lyres to quite quickly arrange & record … then spend sometimes months trying to think of some mythologically-based title to add the most amount of meaning to the feeling of each of these tunes (then spend years dealing with comments on YouTube from brain-dead 'fundamentalist religious types', who not being able to separate fact from aesthetic fiction & not being able to resist imposing their moronic mind-set on everyone else, think my music, all of which is just an evocation of ancient historical aesthetic fiction, is literal 'Hymns of Homage' to 'evil' pantheons of pagan gods'!!).

Despite this fact, in this particular project, I almost began to think that track 8, “The Hex of Hecate”, was literally ‘hexed by Hecate’, the terrifying three-headed ancient Greek goddess of magic! I realized a few days before the album was released, that I had uploaded the 'wrong' version of the final master!! Although pretty much nobody but myself can tell the difference between a few reverb overlays etc., this is just frankly too much for my 'nerdy/bordering on psychotic perfectionism to bear...

I then had to spend a small fortune on my cell phone from the UK to the USA to CD Baby, who distributes my music, to arrange to re-upload the ‘correct’ audio for the track…only for them to email me the next day, to say that the hyperlink I provided to the audio file did not work!!

I then had to try & use Dropbox to send the audio, which I had not used for over a decade & spent hours until the late hours attempting to get it to get my track across the Atlantic & across the continent of the USA from East coast to West coast, to the CD Baby offices in Portland, Oregon.

The corrected track finally arrived - but a day too late as the album had just been released!!

I then had to wait almost a week have to wait an infernal week, before the 'correct' audio master had finally replaced the 'subtely incorrect' one (which had by then, had gone out to about 50 digital music platforms!).

To hear the subtle differences between the audio I intended and the ‘incorrect’ version I spent so long attempting to rectify, compare the now thankfully corrected track on Spotify to the original incorrect version of the track which featured on my YouTube presentation of it, before I realized that this was the ‘wrong’ version!

Music for Meditation

Music is the best aid for meditation I've ever found (other than canyon silence, but that's rare these days). So I'm pleased to announce that Michael Levy is releasing a new album that will ease you into the good vibes. Follow the links below!

Release of my New Compilation Album!

To all my loyal lyre music loving fans, I am delighted to announce the general release across all the major digital music stores and streaming sites, of my brand new compilation album, "Ancient Lyre Music for Meditation".

This compilation album features a selection of my most meditative tracks, which were first featured in a wide selection of my earlier releases between 2012-2017, in addition to this new track, "Etude in the Olympos Pentatonic Scale": a spontaneous improvisation in this haunting ancient Greek tuning, for my stunningly authentic custom-built Luthieros replica ancient Greek tortoise shell lyre, hand-made in modern Greece, with a perfectly preserved natural tortoise shell resonator and authentic gut strings - the nearest one can get to taking the 2,400 year old reconstructed Elgin Lyre out of its display cabinet at the British Museum...and actually playing it:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDAbj0LWTYE

For full details, including a free download link to a PDF of the detailed album notes and a list of all the main purchase links of the album (feel free to share to the rest of the world!), can be found on my new webpage about the album:

http://ancientlyre.com/compilation_albums_for_solo_lyre/ancient_lyre_music_for_meditation/The tracks all feature the use of geometrically pure musical intervals in just intonation, many of which feature the subtly more calming effect of using a reference tuning pitch of A at 432 Hertz. These enigmatic melodies are perfect soundtracks for relaxation, meditation or prayer; for yoga, reiki, aromatherapy or massage; the perfect
musical antidote to living in our stressful, spiritually deprived, aesthetically deprived modern world...

Thank you all once more, for your continued and invaluable support in my ongoing musical mission; to give back to music, its long-forgotten, ancient soul.

Become a True Patron

Music lovers, Michael Levy's work is a labor of love, and it's worth supporting. I urge you to follow this link and make a pledge. You don't need to pledge a lot – you'd be amazed at how much good you can do with just a couple of dollars (pounds? euros?) a month. Follow the links and help Michael keep the beauty of ancient music in the world! I'll be doing the same . . .

Your Support would be a 'Libation to Apollo'!

Dear Loyal Lyre Music Fan,

I am writing to invite you to support my ongoing musical mission, with the launch of my new Patreon campaign!

Indeed, without the support of a record company in my musical quest to reintroduce the recreated lyres and ancient musical modes back into the mostly bland and soulless modern muscial world, my entire work of the last decade, relies entirely on you, my precious team of loyal online followers, to keep spreading the word about my music across social media, blog posts, album reviews etc, so that it can finally reach the new enlightened few!

If, say, 10,000 of my almost 12,000 YouTube subscribers were to pledge just a small monthly donation to my musical mission; to fund the enormous personal cost of replica ancient lyre maintence and acquisition, recording and video equipment, website hosting and most of all, my time to create new compositions, arrangements, recordings, album releases and YouTube videos, then I could finally transform my 'labour of love', into a full-time, creative career!

Your contribution, no matter how small, would literally be a contribution to the development of music itself, so that the world can finally hear again, the long-forgotten, haunting ancient sound of the lyre, resonating across the millenia, into the music of our distant future...be a part of my musical vision!

In return, I can offer my new patrons one-one Skype time; to ask any questions they like about my musical projects, free custom-requested downloads of any track from any one of my albums in any format specified and eventually, maybe even to set up a monthly YouTube podcast series in which my patrons take turns to interview me on my any aspect of my musical mission they want.

Once I have attained this first goal, the next goal to to aquire a magnificent replica of the Bronze Age Megiddo Lyre for my next recording and YouTube projects!

Here, once more, is the direct URL of my brand new Patreon Page:

Thank you all so much, for your invaluable support over the years - you are all to me, now and forever, a gift from the ancient gods!

Michael's Ancient Lyre Music in the USA!

American lovers of ancient music, rejoice! Here are two events in the U.S. To check out in November:

Ancient Greek Lyre Music in Seattle & Ancient Biblical Lyre Music in Washington DC!

I am delighted to announce that my lyre music is literally 'taking over the USA'! In November 2017, there are two monolithically massive events coming up for all you lovely lyre lover's diaries...

1) Ancient Greek Lyre Music - in Seattle!

On 8th November, tracks from my ancient Greek and Roman-themed albums are to be played to 'set the stage' for an event in Seattle, gathering artists and performers to help reflect on how Americans talk about politics today, a full year after the USA's 2016 presidential election. The event will be in downtown Seattle's civic park, and there will be some vague references back to the classical democracies of Athens and Rome - all set to the soundtrack of my ancient Greek-themed lyre music!

Full details of the event can be found here2) Ancient Biblical Lyre Music - in Washington DC!

On 17th November 2017, a selection of tracks from my debut album, "King David's Lyre; Echoes of Ancient Israel" and "King David's Harp" are to be featured, in perpetuity, for the soundscapes being created for the brand new 500 million dollar Museum of the Bible, due to open in Washington DC!Just for you, my loyal lyre loving fans, here is a sneak preview of the music which will be featured in the soundscape - heard here, in an as yet unpublished YouTube video presentation I recently put together, featuring clips of the tracks which will form the new soundscape for the Museum of the Bible, currently being put together by the Richard Lewis Media Group:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox7K6_oOIzw

In readiness for the official opening of the Museum of the Bible, currently scheduled for 17th November, this video will be made 'public' on YouTube on 12th November.

The perpetual licensing of my ancient Biblical-themed releases finally brings immortality to my musical mission of creating a 'new ancestral music' - in this case, for me personally, this is the ultimate honour in bringing back my very own ancient ancestral music back to life - all my ancient Biblical-themed albums were originally inspired by my fascination and yearning to connect directly back with my very own, very ancient Levite ancestors, who over 2000 years ago, played their Biblical lyres in the Levitical Ensemble to accompany the singing of the Levitical Choir during the actual services in the Temple of Jerusalem.

Almost 2000 years since the Biblical lyre of my Levite ancestors fell silent following the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 CE, my recreation of their ancient sacred musical tradition will now forever, live on...

Michael Levy on Greek TV!

Michael has received some well-due appreciation from Greek TV to ancient music for his devotion – click on the links and check it out:

OMG! I'm on national Greek TV!!!

At last! I finally have found a few snippets of 'international televised glory', appearing in an episode of the fascinating Greek language documentary series, "Beyond Borders", broadcast on the national Greek TV channel EPT3.

This particular episode was on recreating both renaissance and ancient musical instruments. From about 26 minutes into the documentary, this TV show wonderfully visually captures, in gorgeous HD, some of the magnificent recreations of the ancient Greek lyre, phorminx, arched harps and kithara of the 'Golden Age' of classical Greece; all lovingly handmade in modern Greece by the inspirational Luthieros master luthier, Anastasios Koumartzis.

The documentary also includes fascinating details of the painstaking process of the hand-crafted construction of the Lutherios lyres (even although regrettably, literally the only Greek word I can actually recognise is 'Yamas''!)

This amazing TV documenary is able to be seen anywhere in the world, anytime, live-streaming from here

Ascension of the Lyre

Listen up all you Spock fans and cosmic music lovers – here's your big chance to explore the soul of the Vulcan and your own cosmic roots at the same time. And if you're willing to do some promotion for Michael Levy, the experience is free! Such a deal! Click! Promote! Enjoy!

Ascension of the Lyre

I am pleased to announce the release on all major digital music stores and streaming sites today, of "Ascension of the Lyre"; my most ultra-experimental album...ever!

This album is my most visionary recording project to date, attempting to ascend the lyre of antiquity from oblivion, onto a psychedelic musical odyssey through the solar system and beyond, into the music of our far distant future...

Inspired by the otherworldly sound of the "Star Trek" character, Spock's "Vulcan Harp", the title of this highly experimental album features a pun on the ancient Greek legend of the ascension of Orpheus from the Underworld (as depicted on the album cover - the most famous lyre player in the literature of classical antiquity) and my musical mission in this album: to literally ascend the lyre from its previous status as a dusty, long-forgotten ancient museum relic; onto a new musical journey into the 21st century and beyond!

I attempt this almost Herculean feat by literally creating for my recreated lyres of antiquity a new voice, by transforming their ancient timbres with a host of contemporary studio effects, magically metamorphosing the sound of the lyre into a 'musical spaceship', evoking cosmic visions of strange and distant worlds...

The album already has an extended review, which can be read here.

Here is the link to my brand new webpage, which lists all the major digital music stores and streaming sites from which the album can be purchased, the YouTube 'promo' video can be viewed and from which a PDF booklet of the detailed album notes can be freely downloaded:
http://www.ancientlyre.com/new_age_ambient_space_music_album/ascension_of_the_lyre/

As an 'independent artist', without the benefit of a record company to promote my music, for the first time ever, I am actually offering the chance to receive this album for free - in return for promoting the release on my behalf!

Great ways to promote the album, are in the form of online blog posts, album reviews on major digital music stores such as iTunes or Amazon and social media shares about the album, including links to streaming sites such as Spotify etc.

If anyone would like to become my 'promo agent' for the this album and in return, to receive this release for freesimply drop me a line!

Thanks once more, everyone, for your invaluable support in my ongoing musical mission to put some lost ancient soul into the soulless, modern musical world...

The Epic of Thebes

Michael Levy has been busy, so there are lots of new links for you to follow to get your favorite music. Click and feast your ears!

The Epic of Thebes (Story of Passion and War)

I am delighted to announce a brand new collaboration with the Egyptian film score composer, Remon Sakr!

For my collaboration in this project, I provided an ancient Egyptian-themed improvisation for lyre, which Sakr orchestrated for two of the tracks on his debut album, "The Epic of Thebes (Story of Passion & War)" - an epic musical journey into the era of Pharaoh Ahmose I and his struggle against the Hyksos...

For track 5, "The Holy Nile (Hymn to Hapi)"the melodic theme I arranged for lyre is skilfully orchestrated with a rich texture of strings and delicately punctuated by harp chords, set against evocative natural sounds of gently lapping waters and birdsong.

For track 7, "Salvations Hymn for Amun (In the North Temple of Amun)", Sakr orchestrated my lyre theme with the exotic, ancient timbres of Egyptian ney flute set against a background of hypnotic Egyptian rhythms, to set the 'ancient Egyptian feel', leading up to the ending section of the track; featuring haunting, sacred-sounding vocals, to conjure up stunning mental imagery of the sort of long-forgotten, ancient sacred rites which may once have been performed in the Temple of Amun.

Here is Sakr's official 'promo' video for the album, in which brief clips of my lyre improvisation can be heard at 0:52 and 1:37 minutes into the video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0lZWcYg6iQ

Here is my own rough 'live' performance of the improvisation I created for the album (attempting to evoke some of Sakr's amazing ancient Egyptian-themed orchestral textures for the tracks, with my Boss RC-1 Loop Pedal!):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpRsDkVUliI

As a special bonus, for all you lovely lyre fans, here is a sneak preview of two as yet unpublished videos, featuring extended length clips of the actual tracks which feature the lyre theme I created for this album:

The Holy Nile (Hymn to Hapi):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC-KD0RbWCA

Salvations Hymn for Amun (In the North Temple of Amun):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxZ77bSgZ-A

The album is out now, on all major digital music stores, including iTunes, Amazon, Google Play and Spotify - all details of where to purchase the album can now be found on Sakr's official Facebook Page.

Such a unique privilege to have had this opportunity of collaborating in such an epic, ancient Egyptian-themed musical production!

A Holiday Release, a Recreated Kithara, and the Hurrian Hymn

Michael Levy has a new album out in time for holiday gift-giving! Follow the links and get to ordering!

Kithara of the Golden Age
I am pleased to announce the release on all major digital music stores and streaming sites, of my new album, "Kithara of the Golden Age". The sequel album to "The Ancient Greek Kithara of Classical Antiquity", this album also features the wonderfully recreated kithara of the Golden Age of classical Greece, complete with its reconstructed 2,500 year old vibrato mechanism, handmade in modern Greece by Luthieros:

http://en.luthieros.com/product/cithara-of-the-golden-age-ancient-greek-cithara-9-strings-top-quality-handcrafted-musical-instrument

The album features original compositions in the original ancient Greek modes, in the wonderfully pure just intonation of antiquity.

Since the kithara is so suited to accompanying the human voice, although I am by no means a professional singer, as in my previous album featuring the kithara, I have added simple vocal lines, to hopefully provide an evocation of how the kithara once may have accompanied the singing of the professional musicians of ancient Greece.

Here is the brand new webpage I have just this minute created, featuring the free download link of the PDF booklet of detailed album notes, my first 'promo' video for the album now on YouTube and all the main purchase links on both the major digital music stores and streaming sites:

Any new album reviews on any of the major digital music stores would of course be like a 'libation to Apollo' in aiding my daily efforts as an 'independent artist', to honestly promote my lyre music to the rest of the unsuspecting world - please feel free to share with the rest of the known universe...thanks for you continued support in my ongoing musical mission, everyone!

Finally, in closing, during my recent updating of my website, I have also recently posted a brand new news bulletin, documenting the incredible chain of global events which have occurred, since one miserable February evening in 2008, I decided to upload my first YouTube video of my arrangement for solo lyre of the 3,400 year old Hurrian Hymn, the oldest fragment of written music so far discovered, in human history - as recently featured in the Daily Mail, Fox News network, Classic FM and even in the NME mainstream pop and rock magazine:

Amazing what magic can be conjured, from nothing more than a miserable 10 quid mono PC mic and quite possibly, the oldest known webcam in human history!

Season’s greetings, everyone - warmest wishes from the freezing UK!

The Sack of Troy (The Musical!)

Michael Levy has an “epic” new single out! Follow the links below . . .

The Sack of Troy: Paean for Ancient Greek Kithara

I am pleased to announce the general release on all the major digital music stores and streaming sites of my new single for solo ancient Greek kithara, "The Sack of Troy: Paean for Ancient Greek Kithara"!

In ancient Greek Classical literature, there was a lost ancient Greek epic by the title of "The Sack of Troy" - which was one of the Epic Cycle, which told the entire history of the Trojan War in epic verse. In creating this new composition for replica ancient Greek kithara, in authentically pure just intonation featuring the intense ancient Greek Dorian Mode, it was therefore my intention to evoke the sort of ancient Greek 'Paean' style melody (an ancient Greek hymn of thanksgiving in the ancient Greek Dorian Mode, to which that lost epic of ancient Greece could have been recited).

This single explores the rhythmic potential of the recreated ancient Greek kithara, by occasionally using the heavier mass of the replica ancient Greek carved bone plectrum as a baton to beat rhythm on the soundboard of the instrument. I also use this piece as a demonstration of the recreated 2500 year old vibrato mechanism of the ancient Greek kithara - handmade in modern Greece by Luthieros.

Here is my brand new webpage about this release, with all the main purchase links and link to the free PDF of the detailed single notes:

The ancient magic of the music of Apollo has once again, been reborn!!!

Michael Levy in the Daily Mail!

Michael Levy has been interviewed on The Daily Mail!  Follow the link below . . .

My arrangement for lyre of the oldest written melody so far discovered - featured in the Daily Mail!

In my daily struggle in my status as an independent musician in the soulless 21st century CE (when I am frustratingly in possession of musical skills which certainly would have made me a legendary living as the 'Bruno Mars of the Bronze Age' in the 21st century BCE!), after another morning spent doing yet another tedious, tiring and totally unrewarding part-time job to make ends meet, I was delighted to be contacted by a journalist from the Daily Mail Online, who wanted to feature one of the viral YouTube renditions of my arrangement for solo lyre of Hurrian Hymn Text H6 in a news story on the world's oldest song!

At approximately 3,400 years old, the Hurrian Hymn Text H6, is literally the oldest surviving substantial fragment of an actual written melody so far discovered, which can actually be interpreted and performed, some 3,400 years later:

Who knows, maybe one day, some ever elusive, enlightened record company out there might now take my musical mission seriously...may almighty Apollo's will be done!

In an Ancient Roman Garden (But Without the Cactus . . . )

Michael Levy has a new single to buy! Follow the link to get your copy . . .

In an Ancient Roman Garden

I am pleased to announce the release of my new ancient Roman-themed single, "In an Ancient Roman Garden"!

In this project, it was my aim to attempt to recreate an evocation of the lost serenity of Classical antiquity...

This single features a completely spontaneous improvisations for chelys (tortoise shell form) lyre, recorded, live in my own garden at the height of Summer, with nothing but the soothing, timeless background sounds of flowing water and birdsong.

The single is available now, from all major digital music stores and streaming sites, including iTunes, Apple Music, Amazon, Google Play, Spotify, CD Baby & Bandcamp:

http://ancientlyre.com/ancient_roman_themed_albums/in_an_ancient_roman_garden/

As usual, as an independent artist, without the benefit of a record company to promote me, each and every new album review or blog post about my musical mission to reintroduce the beautiful lyres of antiquity back into the bland modern world, is to me, literally a 'libation to Apollo' - many thanks, everyone, for your continued support!

Roll Over, Mendelssohn!

Michael Levy's music is popping up in some wonderful places. Click the link to discover how one wedding party turned their ceremony into a truly beautiful musical memory.

Roll over, Mendelssohn!
My music will soon be as popular as his iconic 'Wedding March' - I quite literally just stumbled across a video of a Roman-themed wedding somewhere in the USA, featuring my very own Roman-themed music...this could also quite possibly fire a canon into Pachelbel's Canon!

The video featuring track 1 from my album "Ode to Ancient Rome" being played as the bride and groom move towards the site of the suitably sacred ceremony:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qopXZFtQYbg
This is certainly a step in the right direction to reintroducing the ancient spirit of Apollo into our soulless, sterile, modern 'musical' world! Let us keep the magical musical spirit of the ancient world burning into our dull 21st century, and way beyond...

"Nero's Lyre" To Feature in Riccardo Buscarini's New Ballet Production!

Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Stravinsky? They can now retire - I bring forth into ballet, my awesome lyre! I am delighted to announce that my composition for solo lyre, "Nero's Lyre" is to be featured in a new ballet production "No Lander" by Riccardo Buscarini - to be performed live at the London Place Theatre on 28th October:

"Five sailors lost at sea are exposed to an unrelenting space, nothing to hang onto, no roots, no light and no land. Falling in and out of intricate duets as they grapple to hold on to something, their flesh emerges from the darkness in waving and sculptural torsions. Stark industrial lighting and live-captured sound collide and transform the stage into a deserted wreck. No Lander is a dance about longing and belonging"
